Northumberland Weekly News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with a variety of calls this past week. Here are some examples:

Dec 29:

16 motor vehicle collisions investigated, motorists not adjusting their driving to the weather and road conditions

Officers referred a Percy Twp resident to the Landlord and Tenant Board (1-888-332-3234) for advice after receiving a complaint that she hasn’t had hot water for four days

Report of a neighbour throwing ice at a Colborne area house. All persons were spoken to regarding this longstanding dispute between several adults. No damages occurred and no charges resulted

Dec 30:

Officers attended a Brighton home and spoke to a separated couple regarding a property dispute

Officers spoke to a Campbellford man who reported having his hat knocked off his head by an ex friend. No charges resulted

A 43 yr old Scarborough man was charged with driving while his licence is under suspension after being stopped at a RIDE check near Warkworth.

Dec 31:

Officers were called to a Campbellford business where family members were arguing with staff over the return of a lost cell phone. No criminal charges resulted and the phone was returned to the owner.

Police attended a Hamilton Twp home where a resident had consumed numerous medications and was threatening self-harm. She was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Officers responded to a Cramahe Twp home where a resident with a pre-existing medical condition became confused after consuming alcohol. She was left in the care of a responsible family member.

Jan 1:

Large party causing a disturbance at a Hamilton Twp home. Police attended and dispersed the crowd (12:19am)

Report of an ATV being driven onto private property in Alnwick-Haldimand Twp (12:35am). Officers located the ATV at a nearby home and spoke to several persons. No charges resulted.

Police responded to an assault complaint that occurred at a large party in the Brighton area (1:29am). The caller was too intoxicated to provide officers with a meaningful statement. Minor injuries, investigation ongoing

An intoxicated Percy Twp resident dialed 911 in error causing two officers to respond and ensure the callers safety (2:00am)

An intoxicated visitor to a Brighton home dialed 911 to get assistance from police in finding a taxi (2:20am). He was spoken to regarding the proper use of the emergency line and provided contact information for a taxi company

At 3:16am police responded to a break and enter at the Grafton Community Arena where someone had forced a rear door open. The suspect had fled prior to officers arriving. It’s unknown at this time what, if any, items were taken. The investigation is ongoing.

Jan 2:

Neighbour dispute in Brighton over a visitor sitting in his truck smoking and running the engine causing fumes to go into the adjacent home. Officers spoke to both homes’ occupants and no further calls were received.

An Alnwick-Haldimand Twp tenant complained about the landlord disconnecting hydro to the unit. Officers determined that the on-site landlord also had no hydro service. Deemed not a police matter.

Shortly after 7pm an officer observed a blue Ford pickup truck being operated on Hwy 401 eastbound from the Brighton area with no rear lighting visible. The driver was questioned and it was determined that he had been drinking. He failed a roadside test and was taken to the Quinte West OPP detachment for further tests. As a result of these tests, William Jeffrey LOBB age 57 of Belleville is charged with having Care & Control of a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brighton on February 2, 2016

Jan 3:

Officers assisted a Quebec family whose car had broken down on Hwy 401 in the Port Hope area. Police stood by until a tow company arrived.

A seasonal resort in Alnwick-Haldimand Twp reported their safe broken in to sometime on New Year’s Day. Investigation ongoing.

Police responded to a domestic dispute in Campbellford where a separated couple were arguing over legal documents. No charges resulted.

Northumberland OPP officers also conducted 22 RIDE programs, investigated 16 accidental 911 calls, 26 motor vehicle collisions and 54 traffic related complaints.
