Northumberland Weekly News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with 278 incidents over this four day period, here are some examples:

June 13:

A Grafton business on Old Danforth Rd reported the theft of solar lights from its planter boxes

A 44 yr old Hastings man driving a grey Hyundai on Albert St West was charged with driving while his licence is under suspension and having no currently validated licence plate

The Baltimore Valley Garden Centre reported a break-in sometime overnight. Nothing was taken as the owners took preventative measures to ensure no items of value were on site after-hours.

Two ‘keep the peace’ calls to a Hamilton Twp residence after the breakdown of a friendship requiring one person to leave with his property.

June 14:

A resident on Grandview Ct in Hamilton Twp reported losing a GPS from her unlocked car overnight

Police were called to assist members of the public with a baby fawn that had wandered into downtown Hastings without its mother. The fawn was placed in a crate until officials from Animal Control could arrive.

A resident on Lorraine Av in Hamilton Twp reported his truck stolen sometime overnight along with his wallet and a quantity of cash. He advised the officers that the keys were left in the unlocked vehicle, a blue 1994 Ford Ranger. It was recovered in Durham Region the next day. Investigation ongoing

Officers provided assistance to a man in Campbellford who found himself with no accommodations for the night after an online arranged date didn’t work out.

June 15:

A Brighton resident reported buying Canada’s Wonderland tickets from an online site named Red Group Deals. When she tried to enter the park she was advised that they were fraudulent tickets. Police would like to remind the public to only purchase tickets from sites that you know to be valid, watch for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation. Overseas scam artists often fail to write in clear English. The victim advised police that this was the first time she had used this particular site.

Two incidents of assaults were reported at the Warkworth Institution. In both cases the victims were uncooperative with police resulting in no charges being laid.

Police were alerted to a Hamilton Twp resident threatening self-harm on a social media site. Officers located the individual at home and arranged to have him attend a hospital for treatment.

A Seymour Twp mother reported an altercation with her son over taking his cell phone away as a punishment. Officers spoke to the family and provided advice. No charges resulted.

June 16:

Report of a dump truck rolling over at a Solar Farm site on Payne Rd in Hamilton Twp. The driver received minor injuries and the Ministry of Labour was notified.

Both a Campbellford senior and a Hastings senior recognized a ‘Canada Revenue Agency’ call as a scam and reported it to police. No personal information was given by either resident and no money was lost. They were both advised to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 who keeps statistics on current fraud schemes.

Report of a park bench valued at $700 being stolen from the Community Garden on Doxsee Av North in Campbellford. Investigation ongoing.

Police settled a family dispute that originated at a palliative care unit in Trent Hills where an ailing family member was being cared for. The disputed property, jewellery, was left with a neutral family member until eventual ownership could be determined. No charges resulted.

Notable Incidents: Northumberland OPP also investigated six accidental 911 calls, 28 motor vehicle collisions, and conducted two RIDE programs.
