Northumberland Weekly News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with 166 incidents this past weekend, here are some examples:

June 24:

Police assisted a stranded motorist at 12:45am on Hwy 401 near Grafton. The officers managed to get the car started for the lone female and followed her to a garage where she could have it fixed in the morning. No tow companies would attend for various reasons.

Report of a tractor-trailer fire in a ditch Hwy 401in the Port Hope area was determined to be construction workers using a ‘boiler’.

A resident on Majestic Hills Dr. in Hamilton Twp reported that someone had entered his home through an unlocked door last night while he was at home and attempted to steal his car which was found partially outside of the garage. Investigation ongoing.

A Cramahe Twp resident was arrested and charged with Uttering Threats to members of his family including his spouse. He faces a further charge related to the death of a number of pets. He was held for a bail hearing. Name withheld.

June 25:

A Cobourg man was arrested and charged with Uttering Threats after an investigation into a domestic incident at a Port Hope motel.

Seven persons were charged with Trespassing on private property in the Marydale Park Rd and Wallace Wood Rd area of Port Hope.

A Port Hope man was charged with the following offences after police investigated a domestic incident. Assault (two counts), Assault Peace Officer (two counts), Assault with intent to resist arrest, and Mischief Under $5,000 related to damages caused to a police vehicle. He was held at the Cobourg detachment until sober then released with an impending court date. Name withheld.

Officers were called to a Port Hope residence in response to a domestic disturbance. One partner had positioned his vehicle behind the other’s in an attempt to stop them from driving while impaired. They were separated for the night and no charges resulted.

Jun 26:

Police assisted three young adults who found themselves stranded on County Rd 65 at 3:48am after their ride stopped and asked them to leave the car. Officers took them to a 24 hr business in Port Hope where they could make arrangements with family members to be picked up.

Officers from Central Region Highway Safety Division conducted speed enforcement on Hwy 401in the Port Hope area resulting in six drivers being charged with Stunt Driving – Excessive Speed:

23 yr old Ajax, Ontario man – 153km/h

52 yr old Cambridge, Ontario woman – 156km/h

36 yr old Mississauga, Ontario man – 153 km/h

24 yr old Toronto, Ontario woman – 164 km/h

27 yr old Toronto, Ontario man – 160 km/h

25 yr old York, Ontario man – 164 km/h

All drivers had their licences suspended for 7 days, their car towed from the highway and impounded for the same period of time. They all face an impending court date to answer to the charge.

a 38 yr old local man was charged with a Liquor offence in Victoria Square Park in Colborne

**Notable Incidents: Northumberland OPP also investigated six accidental 911 calls, nine motor vehicle collisions, and conducted two RIDE programs over this time period.
