Northumberland Weekly News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with 274 incidents over this four day period, here are some examples:

Aug 22:

A complaint of loud dump trucks on Stoney Point Rd in Brighton at 4:00am resulted in a company stopping the process of dumping scraped asphalt from Hwy 401 to that location.

Report of several unlocked vehicles on 12th Line East in Seymour Twp entered Saturday night. Sunglasses, cell phone, GPS, Chanel ‘Chance’ perfume (1oz bottle) and money taken.

Police responded to a report of a break-in to a home on Sanford St. in Brighton that occurred between 9:30am-3:00pm. The culprit entered through a rear door and stole several items including ladies jewellery, an orange 24” Nakamura bicycle and a Black&Decker cordless drill. Investigation ongoing.

Aug 23:

A 39 yr old Campbellford man was arrested and charged with possession of stolen property and breach of probation. A large quantity of suspected stolen property was recovered and police are in the process of attempting to identify the owners. The accused was held for a bail hearing.

Police provided traffic control at the scene of a fire on Purdy Rd in Cramahe Twp where a bulldozer caught on fire. The apparent cause was electrical.

Police received a report of the driver of a blue Fiat texting while traveling on Hwy 401 in the Port Hope area. The driver reportedly cut off a tractor-trailer and didn’t notice. Officers were unable to locate the car and a warning letter will be sent to the registered owner advising him/her of the complaint.

Aug 24:

Report of ongoing mischiefs at night in the areas of Popular Dr, Main St and Boulton St in Hamilton Twp. Lawn furniture overturned, bicycles thrown into bushes and door bells being rung. Officers to increase patrols and residents are urged to report any suspicious persons to police.

Police attended an Alnwick-Haldimand Twp home for a domestic disturbance. One partner spent the night elsewhere and no charges resulted.

Report of a suspicious unoccupied car with the engine running on King St East in Colborne at 1am. Moments later the driver returned then drove a short distance to Victoria Square once again leaving the car. The caller then advised that it appeared that the driver was attempting to ‘catch’ a Pokémon. The car was gone when police arrived and no crimes were reported in the area that night.

Aug 25:

An aluminium boat with an Evenrude outboard motor was found adrift on Rice Lake and towed back to Harris Boatworks in Hamilton Twp. Owner to be contacted and notified.

Northumberland Hills Hospital requested police attend an Alnwick-Haldimand Twp home and attempt to locate next-of-kin for a gravely ill patient.

Paramedics requested police assistance at an Alnwick-Haldimand Twp home to help with an aggressive patient who was eventually transported by EMS without any difficulties.

Officers conducting radar on County Rd 28 near Rice Lake Dr in Port Hope stopped a black GMC pickup truck for speeding. The driver was found to have been drinking and failed a roadside test. He was arrested and taken to the Cobourg detachment for further tests. As a result of these tests, Chase Robert ATKINSON age 33 of Hamilton Twp, ON is charged with Operation of a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on September 28, 2016.

**Northumberland OPP officers also investigated 12 accidental 911 calls, 12 motor vehicle collisions and 54 traffic related complaints during this time period.
