Northumberland Weekly News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with a variety of incidents this past week, here are some examples:

Jan 16:

Police provided advice to a separated couple in Alnwick-Haldimand Twp resulting in a third party being used for communication between the two from now on.

A break-in to a garage at a residence on County Rd 2 near Walt St in Brighton was reported as occurring sometime overnight. Investigation ongoing.

Police assisted the Cramahe Twp Fire Department at the scene of a barn fire on County Rd 2. No further police involvement was required as the fire was not deemed suspicious in nature.

Jan 17:

Police responded to a break-in to a Brighton business on Elizabeth St that occurred sometime overnight. A quantity of cash was taken and the investigation ongoing.

Police assisted the Trent Hills Fire Department at the scene of residential fire on River Road in Seymour Twp. The fire was deemed to be non-suspicious and no further police involvement was required.

Officers responded to a disturbance at a Brighton home involving an elderly family member experiencing aggressive dementia related difficulties. Police referred the family to a community agency that could assist them going forward.

Jan 18:

Police responded to a family dispute in Campbellford involving an adult daughter brandishing a 2’x4’ piece of wood. Officers spoke to all family members, none of whom were injured, and resolved the matter without charges being laid.

A Brighton homeowner reported receiving a money order for a rental cottage she had advertised. The amount on the money order was more than the advertised rent. She contacted the sender who advised her to refund him the excessive amount ($1,070) via MoneyGram. The resident sent the money then found out the money order was fraudulent. The MoneyGram had already been cashed in the Ukraine. The investigation is ongoing.

Officers spoke to a Hamilton Twp resident who complained about a neighbour parking a vehicle on his property because their own driveway was icy. The vehicle was voluntarily moved.

Jan 19:

Two calls were received from a Hastings area home, one yesterday and one today indicating serious offences were taking place. Both calls were unfounded and determined to be as a result of hallucinations caused by new medications prescribed to an occupant. The resident was transported to a nearby hospital after which, police offered referrals to community agencies to assist the family.

Police responded to a report of an assault that occurred at a business on Big Apple Dr in Colborne between two men. Officers determined that one man was experiencing a mental health crisis. He was apprehended for his own safety and the safety of others and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. No charges resulted.

Police received a report of money taken from an unlocked car on Whites Rd in Brighton sometime overnight. Residents are reminded to lock their vehicles when unattended and to keep valuables and keys on their person, not in the vehicle.

**Northumberland OPP officers investigated three accidental 911 calls, 14 motor vehicle collisions, 20 traffic related complaints and conducted five RIDE programs during this time period.
