Northumberland Weekly News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with a variety of incidents this past week, here are some examples:

Apr 24:

Police assisted the Brighton Fire Department at the scene of a boat fire on County Rd 64 at 1:41 a.m. No one was injured and the investigation is ongoing.

St. Paul’s Church on County Road 10 in Port Hope reported that someone had damaged a side door in an attempt to break in to the church sometime overnight. No entry was gained and the investigation remains active.

At 7:03 p.m. police responded to a domestic disturbance near Hwy 401 and Telephone Rd in Brighton. The investigation revealed that an out-of-province couple were travelling through the area on Hwy 401 and became embroiled in an argument causing the female to exit their truck which was pulling an empty horse trailer. She then entered the trailer to retrieve some clothing at which time her partner drove off on the highway with the woman in the open doored trailer. The truck eventually stopped causing the woman to fall out resulting in injuries considered to be non-life threatening. The 59 yr old male was arrested and charged with Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Uttering Death Threats and Uttering Threats to Damage Property. He was held for a bail hearing the next day and has since been held in custody with his next court appearance on May 10, 2017. Name withheld to protect the identity of the victim.

Apr 25:

Officers were called to a Brighton home to assist a parent who was unable to convince her young child to go to school. Police provided parenting advice to the mother and drove the child to school.

Police received a report of a green Mitsubishi tailgating another vehicle eastbound on Hwy 401 in the Colborne area. The dispatcher requested the caller move to another lane which he did. The suspect vehicle then passed the caller. The car was not located by attending officers.

Police are investigating the theft and recovery of a white cube van taken from a Lakeshore Rd property in Brighton and recovered a few properties away.

Apr 26:

A 27 yr old Trent Hills driver was charged with Stunt Driving – Excessive Speed while travelling 153 km/h on Hwy 401 in the Port Hope area. His licence was suspended for seven days and the blue Honda Civic was impounded for the same period to time.

A 32 yr old Port Hope woman was stopped for travelling 144 km/h on Hwy 401 in the Port Hope area. She was charged with speeding and also faces a charge under the Tobacco Tax Act after a quantity of unmarked cigarettes were observed and seized.

At 9:00 p.m. an officer on general patrol on County Rd 45 in Alnwick-Haldimand Twp stopped a grey Buick Rendezvous for speeding. The driver, a 40 yr old Clarington woman, was found to be prohibited from driving due to an Impaired Driving/Over 80mg conviction. She was arrested and charged with Speeding and Driving While Disqualified. She was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on May 31, 2017. The car was also impounded for a period of 45 days.

Apr 27:

Police responded to 60 Prince Edward St in Brighton where an apartment window screen was set on fire. The fire was extinguished by the tenant prior to police or fire officials arrived. No-one was injured and damages were minimal. The investigation is ongoing.

Owners of the (Railway) Memory Junction Museum on Maplewood Ave in Brighton reported damage to one of the railway car windows. Officers identified the youth responsible and made arrangements for the parent to pay for the damages. No charges resulted as the youth was under 12 yrs. old.

A resident on Front St North in Campbellford reported the theft of a yellow and green antique Foo Dog statute (three feet in height) from her back porch over the last five days.

Northumberland OPP officers investigated five accidental 911 calls, 11 motor vehicle collisions, 40 traffic related complaints and conducted 14 RIDE program during this time period.
