(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) –Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with a variety of calls this past long weekend, here are some examples:
May 15:
– Police were requested by Cramahe Twp Fire officials to attend the scene of a house fire on Burbridge Rd (4:00am). No one was home at the time of the fire. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing by Northumberland OPP Crime Unit.
– Owner of a home on Mills St N in Campbellcroft reported a break and enter sometime over the past two weeks, copper tubing was taken. Investigation ongoing
– Report of a neighbour dispute in Brighton centering around children from one home playing on the property line. Officers mediated and cleared with no further action
– Police were called to a bank in Hastings where an agitated/disoriented man was waving a mirror at staff. Bank officials stopped customers from entering for their own safety while inside, staff kept their distance. Officers arrived and quickly determined that the man was experiencing a mental health crisis. He was apprehended for his own safety and the safety of others. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. No one was injured.

May 16:
– Police responded to a domestic disturbance in Alnwick-Haldimand Twp where a couple were arguing over one partner’s jealousy. Alcohol was a contributing factor. No charges resulted. (12:30am)
– A vehicle was stopped on Percy St Colborne and the driver, a 41 yr old Trenton woman, was found to be under suspension. She was charged accordingly as well as operating without insurance. (10:39am)
– A Vehicle was stopped on County Rd 10 Port Hope and the driver, a 49 yr old Manvers Twp man, was found to be under suspension. He was charged accordingly as well as operating without insurance. (11:36am)
– The ‘Memory Junction Museum’ in Brighton reported several buildings and vehicles spray painted by vandals sometime overnight. Investigation ongoing.
– The owner of Hickory Island on Rice Lake reported trespassers. Future patrols to be made by Northumberland OPP Marine Unit.
– A 40 yr old Toronto man was charged with stunt driving – excessive speed (158 km/h) on Hwy 401 Port Hope area. He lost his licence and car for 7 days.
– Report of suspicious persons at the Grafton Co-op (10pm). They were gone when officers arrived. An outbuilding was found insecure, no items apparently missing. Investigation ongoing
– A property owner in Percy Twp was charged under the Trent Hills noise bylaw for excessive noise after an earlier caution by officers was not heeded.
May 17:
– Noise complaints continued throughout the County into the early morning hours requiring officers to attend and speak to several property owners
– A 65 yr old Kitchener woman was charged with stunt driving – excessive speed 159km/h Hwy 401 Brighton area. Her licence was suspended for 7 days and her car, a 2013 Mazda, was impounded for the same period of time. (9:30am)
– A 39 yr old Scarborough man was charged with stunt driving – excessive speed 182 km/h Hwy 401 Brighton area. His licence was suspended for 7 days and his car, a VW Jetta, was impounded for the same period of time. Officers noted that his three children, all less than 10 yrs of age, were also in the car.
– A resident in Hamilton Twp called police to report people in her house and her husband not there and possibly dead. Officers determined that the caller was experiencing mental health issues enhanced by the use of alcohol. The home was found to be empty and her husband was at church. The woman was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.(12:40pm)
– At 3:45pm police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at an Alnwick-Haldimand Twp trailer. A subsequent investigation resulted in a 21 yr old female being arrested and charged with Spousal Assault. She was released with conditions until her court date. The argument apparently started over one of them smoking in the trailer. Names withheld to protect the identity of the victim.
– Officers were conducting a RIDE program on County Rd 64 in Brighton when a red Dodge Ram pickup truck was stopped (4:06pm). The driver was found to have consumed alcohol and failed a roadside test. He was taken to the Quinte West OPP detachment for further tests. As a result of these tests, Michael CANE age 23 of Oshawa is charged with Impaired Care & Control of a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on June 10, 2015.
– A Percy Twp couple who have been married for 29 yrs called 911 when one of them insisted that the other come in the house. Officers attended and determined that the caller didn’t like being ‘bossed around’. The call was determined to be non-criminal in nature. Alcohol was a contributing factor.
– At 6pm police were called to an Alnwick-Haldimand Twp home for a domestic disturbance. A subsequent investigation resulted in a 53 yr old male being arrested for Assault with a weapon and Mischief Under $5,000. He was held for a bail hearing scheduled for May 19, 2015. Names withheld. The male had reportedly consumed a 26oz bottle of liquor that day.
– Police continued to respond to several noise complaints throughout the evening and into the night.
May 18:
– Officers responded to a complaint of threatening between two ex-roommates in Percy Twp. As a result of the ensuing investigation, a 57 yr old man from Consecon in Prince Edward County is charged with Uttering Threats and Mischief Under $5,000. He was held for a bail hearing on May 19, 2015. Names withheld.
– Police were called to a Campbellford Conservation area for a report of males engaged in indecent acts. All persons had left in their respective vehicles once officers had arrived.
– Four mental health related calls to a Cramahe Twp home this weekend. The detachment mental health liaison officer met with family members and put a safety plan in place for everyone involved.
– Police responded to a complaint of 4 unwanted males from the warden at Pinnacle Park in Alnwick-Haldimand Twp. They left shortly after police were called.
– At 1:15am (May 19) a westbound motorcycle on Hwy 401 in the Cobourg area was ‘clocked’ by police travelling at 199 km/h. A 35 yr old Peterborough man is charged with stunt driving – excessive speed and operating his motorcycle without insurance. His driver’s licence was seized for 7 days as was his bike.
Northumberland OPP also conducted nine RIDE programs, investigated14 motor vehicle collisions and 48 traffic related complaints. A very busy weekend.
