Northumberland Weekend News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with a variety of incidents this past weekend, here are some examples:

Jan 20:

Police attended a Port Hope residence after a father was refused visitation with his son as per a Family Court order. Officers spoke to everyone involved and the young person went with his father for the weekend.

At 11:56pm police received a complaint of a blue GMC Jimmy driving erratically in the eastbound lanes of Hwy 401 in the Port Hope area. The vehicle was reported to be swerving and at one point possibly struck the centre median. The vehicle was located at the Port Hope Onroute service centre and officers noted open liquor within the reach of the driver and signs of impairment. He was arrested and taken to the Cobourg detachment for further tests. As a result of these tests, Riley David BEALES age 23 of Waterdown, Ontario is charged with Impaired Care & Control of a motor vehicle and Care & Control of a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on February 15, 2017.

Police checked on the well-being of a young child at a Brighton residence at the request of a family member who was concerned about the child’s health. Officers found the child to be in good health and had no concerns that would cause further police involvement.

Jan 21:

At 1:47am police responded to a domestic disturbance at a Campbellford residence. As a result of the ensuing investigation, one partner was arrested and charged with Spousal Assault, Utter Threats and Mischief Under $5,000. He was released with an impending court date. Name withheld to protect the identity of the victim.

At 4:01am police received a report of blue Honda CRV driving erratically on Hwy 401 eastbound from the Whitby area. The SUV was reportedly swerving almost running off the roadway into a ditch and driving without running lights. The vehicle was stopped in the Cobourg area resulting in the driver, a 32 yr old Otonabee-South Monogan Twp man, being arrested and charged with Dangerous Operation of a motor vehicle. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg March 15, 2017.

Police were called to a Brighton home where a teenage son was damaging furniture, walls and a door. When officers arrived, the youth ran into a wooded area behind the residence. Officers located and arrested him a short distance away. He was held for a bail hearing scheduled for the next day charged with Mischief Under $5,000.

At 11:52pm officers responded to a report of a motor vehicle in a ditch on Wicklow Beach Rd in Alnwick-Haldimand Twp. The driver, who had been drinking, was located at a nearby residence and arrested. He was taken to the Cobourg detachment for further tests resulting in Tyler Jonathon HOWARD age 31 of Quinte West, Ontario being charged with Operating a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood and Driving while under suspension. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on March 15, 2017.

Jan 22:

An elderly Brighton resident suffering from dementia was located wandering on Hwy 401 in the Brighton area. He was returned home uninjured and officers ensured that the family was receiving help from local community agencies.

A Campbellford resident called 911 requesting police assistance when she couldn’t unlock the door to leave her apartment. An officer contacted her and suggested a locksmith or the landlord would be a more appropriate service.

An Alnwick-Haldimand Twp resident requested police speak to a family member who lives elsewhere and have him stop any communication which she reported as harassing in nature. Officers contacted that family member and cautioned him for harassment.

Northumberland OPP officers also investigated seven accidental 911 calls, seven motor vehicle collisions, 19 traffic related complaints and conducted eight RIDE programs over the weekend.
