(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) –Officers from the Northumberland detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with a variety of calls this past week, here are some examples:
Nov 27:
A Brighton business received a call from a person identifying themselves as a representative from Hydro One stating that they owed $1,500 on their bill. The person stated that service would be cut off in 10min if it was not paid. The money was paid via a bank transfer to the fraudster. The employee checked her account after paying the money and found the account was up to date with no money owing. Another Brighton business received a similar call and did not fall victim to the scam. Police advise business and home owners to verify the status of their account prior to paying any outstanding bills.
A business in the Colborne industrial park reported the attempted theft of a roll of copper wire which had been rolled across the road and left in a field. Investigation ongoing.
Two car collision on Elizabeth St Brighton resulted in a 48 yr old local man being charged with Following too Closely. Both drivers were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Nov 28:
Police attended a Colborne residence for a domestic dispute that was occurring while one partner was collecting belongings to move out. No charges resulted.
Police attended a Percy Twp residence for a domestic dispute where a couple was arguing over a live trap on an adjacent property. No charges resulted and one partner was transported to hospital for a minor self-inflicted injury
Police responded to a motor vehicle collision on County Rd 2 at Drummond St in Brighton where a Pontiac Grand Am had rolled over into a ditch (6:31pm). Officers determined that there were no injuries and identified the driver who was subsequently arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle and taken to the Brighton detachment for further tests. As a result of further testing, Bryan HAINES age 38 of Brighton was charged with Having Care & Control of a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs or alcohol, Care & Control of a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood and driving while disqualified. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brighton on January 5, 2016.
Nov 29:
Police attended a Cramahe Twp home when a teenager returned home late at night and was refused entry. Officers spoke to the parents and the youth was allowed in for the night with the discussion to continue the next day.
A Hamilton Twp business on Telephone Rd reported that someone had tried to pry open the hood on a company vehicle overnight.
An officer conducting radar enforcement on Hwy 401 in the Brighton area stopped a black Fiat 500 for travelling 143km/h at 7:42pm. The driver had been drinking and failed a roadside test. He was arrested and taken to the Quinte West detachment for further tests. As a result of these tests, Tekle WELDEGEBRIEL age 38 of Winnipeg, MB was charged with having Care & Control of a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on December 9, 2015.
Nov 30:
Police attended a Port Hope property where the owner reported a ‘squatter’ in a trailer. Both individuals were spoken to and advised that they have lawyers working on a resolution
Police were called to the area of County Rd 35 and Faux Rd in Percy Twp for a report of three white dogs running loose on the roadway. Officers attended and located the dogs back at their residence. Owners were spoken to.
Several detachment officers and other OPP resources involved in search of missing senior with dementia in Hamilton Twp. He was located the next day in good health (see full release)
Dec 1:
Report of persons in a black Jeep Wrangler ‘jack lighting’ for deer on Concession Rd 2 West in Percy Twp at 1am. The vehicle was not located by officers who will conduct future patrols in an effort to identify the individuals
Officers responded to 10 motor vehicle collisions from 6:30-9:30am, the majority of which occurred on Hwy 401 in the Brighton area. Minor injuries only
A Hammill Rd Port Hope home owner reported his garage broken in to three times in the past six weeks. Items stolen include a red Roper riding lawn mower, a quantity of pressure treated cedar (2x10s, 2x6s, 2x8s and various deck boards), 25 fifty pound bags of concrete and a quantity of steel 4×4 post saddles. Investigation ongoing
Dec 2:
Northumberland OPP traffic unit charged 6 drivers for speeding on Ontario St in Hamilton Twp including one vehicle measured to be travelling 103km/h in a 50 km/h zone in the area of a daycare centre
A youth who flicked a cigarette butt at a police cruiser was charged with Littering on a Highway
An intoxicated Campbellford man called police because a neighbour wouldn’t accept a gift from him. All parties were spoken to by officers and no further calls were received that night
Dec 3:
At 12:39am police received a complaint of a possible impaired driver on County Rd 28 southbound into the Port Hope area. Officers located the GMC Acadia which had reportedly driven in the oncoming lanes. The driver was arrested and taken to the Peterborough detachment for tests. As a result of these tests, Christopher MCILMOYLE age 31 yrs of Port Hope was charged with Driving a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs or alcohol and Driving a motor vehicle when his blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on January 6, 2016
A Hastings senior reported two persons in her house. Officers found no-one in the home and determined that the resident has dementia. Family members were contacted and follow up to be done with the Alzheimer’s Society
Several persons attempted to use gift cards at the Colborne LCBO that hadn’t been activated apparently obtained from the same person. Investigation ongoing
Northumberland OPP officers also conducted 20 RIDE programs, investigated ten accidental 911 calls, 25 motor vehicle collisions and 47 traffic related complaints.
