Northumberland Weekend News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with a variety of calls over the Easter weekend, here are some examples:

Mar 25:

Police continued to receive calls about icy road conditions throughout the County including one of a driver swerving while taking ‘selfies’ on Hwy 401 eastbound in the Cobourg area. The vehicle, described as a grey 2016 VW with several young female occupants, was not located by officers.

Report of the same Brampton area driver losing control of his vehicle and sliding into the ditch on Hwy 401 in the Brighton area then repeating this in the Cobourg area. In both cases he endured the costs of a tow company services. No injuries occurred.

Report of four abandoned cars on Little Rd N in Hamilton Twp due to ice covered roads

An intoxicated resident in Alnwick-Haldimand Twp called 911 shortly after 5am to complain about the roads being icy preventing his wife from going to work.

Mar 26:

Police, EMS and Hamilton Fire Dep’t responded to a ‘fully engulfed’ car fire on Telephone Rd in Hamilton Twp shortly after 7am. After speaking to the occupants who had exited the vehicle safely, officers determined that a westbound Mercedes on Hwy 401 lost control, ran off the roadway coming to rest in the parking lot of a business directly north of the highway. One passenger sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported by EMS to an area hospital. The 52 year old Quebec driver (male) was charged with Careless Driving.

A Trent Hills resident attempted self-harm with a pellet gun and received minor injuries. He was left in the care of medical staff for further treatment.

Complaint of erratic driving almost causing a collision on Hwy 401 eastbound in the Port Hope area at 5:30pm. Officers located the orange Pontiac Sunfire and determined the driver had been drinking. He was arrested and taken to the Cobourg detachment for further tests. As a result of these tests, Mark Edward DUBYK age 49 of Whitby Ontario is charged with Impaired Care & Control of a motor vehicle, Having Care & Control of a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg in 100ml of blood, Driving while disqualified, Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and other offences including having open liquor in the vehicle. He was turned over to Durham Regional Police who held warrants for his arrest. He is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on April 20, 2016 on OPP charges.

Domestic dispute in Port Hope involving a separated couple arguing over custody of their cat. No charges resulted

Mar 27:

Shortly after midnight a 2011 Hyundai was measured to be travelling 160 km/h eastbound on Hwy 401 in the Port Hope area. The vehicle was stopped and the lone driver identified himself with a factitious name. He was arrested and a subsequent search of the car revealed two other provincial offence tickets in the past three weeks in that same name, both issued in the Toronto area. A subsequent check of the driver’s real name uncovered two driving suspensions. Tyvon Ramando HALL age 20 of Etobicoke Ontario is charged with three counts of Obstructing a Peace Officer, Stunt Driving – Excessive Speed, Careless Driving and driving while under suspension. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on April 20, 2016.

At 1:14am police received a report of a car swerving in its lane on Hwy 401 westbound in Alnwick-Haldimand Twp. The vehicle was located exiting the highway at County Rd 45 and the same erratic driving was observed by police. After a brief conversation with officers, the driver was arrested for impaired driving and taken to the Cobourg detachment for further tests. When in custody the driver failed/refused to provide a suitable sample of his breath. As a result, David HAINES age 31 of Cobourg Ontario is charged with Impaired Care & Control of a motor vehicle and Failing or Refusing to provide a sample. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on April 20, 2016.

A request for assistance at 3am from Cobourg Police responding to persons fighting in front of a residence was cancelled prior to OPP officers arriving.

Police responded to a domestic dispute in Campbellford. As a result of the ensuing investigation, the male partner was arrested and charged with Spousal Assault and three counts of Mischief Under $5,000. He was held for a bail hearing. Names withheld to protect the identity of the victim.

Mar 28:

A teenaged couple contacted police for assistance when caught out walking in a storm at 5am on County Rd 35 in Seymour Twp. Officers located the young couple and took them home.

Police investigated an Easter weekend family dispute in Hamilton Twp that ended up with an assault occurring between two family members. No charges resulted at the request of the victim.

OPP officers assisted Cobourg Police in searching for a robbery suspect at large in the Town of Cobourg. OPP Forensic Identification Services also provided assistance at the scene.

Northumberland OPP officers also responded to seven accidental 911 calls, investigated a total of 13 motor vehicle collisions, 39 traffic related complaints and conducted eight RIDE programs.
