(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with a variety of incidents this past weekend, here are some examples:
Feb 2:
At 10:05pm an officer was on patrol on Danforth St near Burnham St in Hamilton Twp and came across a car in a ditch leaning against a hydro pole. The uninjured driver was identified and showed signs of impairment. Further tests were conducted at the roadside resulting in the driver being arrested for impaired operation. He was taken to the Cobourg detachment for further tests. As a result of those tests, Jackson HANNAH age 21 of Hamilton Twp is charged with Having Care & Control of a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on February 22, 2017.
Feb 3:
Police responded to a disturbance at a Hamilton Twp motel at 1:00am. As a result of the ensuing investigation a 42 yr old man was arrested and charged with Assault with a Weapon. A Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) was deployed during the arrest which resulted in the man being taken into custody uninjured. He was held for a bail hearing scheduled for today. Name withheld to protect the identity of the victim as the two persons were in a relationship.
Theft of gas was reported from the Shell gas station on Telephone Rd in Brighton at 6:52pm. A male Caucasian driving a 4 door silver hatchback failed to pay for $34.17. Investigation ongoing.
Feb 4:
Police are investigating the theft of a purple 2006 Chevrolet HHR Ont. Licence #CAYJ044 stolen sometime overnight from a King Park Ave address in Campbellford.
At 3:02pm an officer was finishing a traffic stop on Hwy 401 eastbound in the Port Hope area when he noticed a tractor-trailer approaching him from behind in the right lane. The truck failed to move over into the centre lane despite the absence of any traffic around the truck causing the cruiser to shake as it passed by. The officer stopped the truck and noted the driver showed signs of impairment and had several empty cans of beer behind his seat. He was arrested and taken to the Cobourg detachment for further tests. As a result of these tests, Ronald DUESLING age 55 of Burlington, Ontario is charged with Impaired Care & Control of a motor vehicle, Having Care & Control of a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood and Dangerous Operation of a motor vehicle. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on February 22, 2017.
At 5:00pm police began attempts to locate a male in a truck threatening self-harm with a long-gun firearm. Officers searching an area in Cramahe Twp heard a gunshot as they approached a farmer’s field. Police contained the area for the safety of the public and began to communicate with him. During the course of that communication the man again discharged the gun. After a lengthy communication with police the man voluntarily surrendered himself and was taken to a nearby hospital for an assessment of his mental health. No one was injured as a result of this investigation and subsequent apprehension. The investigation is ongoing.
Feb 5:
Police attended a Hastings home for a domestic dispute over home ownership that resulted in one of the partners spending the night elsewhere. No charges resulted.
Three missing youths for which there were no known safety concerns returned to their respective Brighton homes. Police verified their return and ensured their good health and wellbeing.
Northumberland OPP officers also investigated five accidental 911 calls, 11 motor vehicle collisions, 23 traffic related complaints and conducted seven RIDE programs over the weekend.
