Northumberland Weekend News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with a variety of incidents this past weekend, here are some examples:

Mar 3:

Police received a report of a break-in to a Cortland Cres home in Colborne sometime overnight. The culprit forced open a side bedroom window and left through the rear door. It is unknown at this time what items were stolen and the investigation is ongoing.

Police attended a Campbellford church in response to an accidental 9-1-1 call from an Apple watch being worn by a parishioner. Officers confirmed there was no emergency.

Officers were called to an Alnwick-Haldimand Twp neighbourhood where a dog (Alaskan Malamute) on the loose attacked and killed another resident’s dog (Beagle). Police identified the aggressive dog’s owner, ensured the dog had been secured and notified the Animal Control officer for further follow up and possible charges.

Mar 4:

An officer conducting radar enforcement on Oak Ridges Dr in Hamilton Twp at 7:20am stopped a silver Ford SUV for a speeding offence. The 24 yr old Roseneath woman was found to be driving while under two driver’s licence suspensions. She was charged accordingly with Speeding and Driving While Under Suspension.

Officers attended to keep the peace at a Trent Hills residence when a tenant requested police presence for an inspection by their landlord. An argument ensued between both parties resulting in the landlord leaving the premises before completion of the inspection. No charges resulted.

An officer on general patrol at 7:45pm on County Rd 30 near County Rd 29 observed a green Acura being driven without rear lights. Upon seeing the police vehicle, the Acura turned quickly onto County Rd 29 then drove into a nearby cornfield. Police located the abandoned car and subsequently arrested the driver hiding a short distance away in the field. Robert Michael TIGHE age 25 of Havelock, Ontario is charged with Driving While Under Suspension, Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Insurance and two other Highway Traffic Act equipment related offences. The car was towed from the scene and impounded for seven days. TIGHE was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on May 3, 2017.

Mar 5:

Police attended a noise complaint on Woodland Ave Port Hope at 12:50am and cautioned the occupants for loud music. No further complaints were received that night and no charges resulted.

Police responded to a report of an elderly dementia sufferer who had wandered away from his retirement residence in Trent Hills at about 5:00pm. Officers located his walker approx. one kilometre away when they were approached by a nearby resident who had found the senior in her living room when she returned home to her Second St address. The senior, who was in good health, was returned to his supervised retirement home where arrangements were made with staff to prevent future incidents such as this.

Police received a report of a damaged Hydro One backhoe (rear window smashed) parked on Maplegrove Rd Cramahe Twp. Investigation ongoing.

Northumberland OPP officers also investigated 6 accidental 9-1-1 calls, 10 motor vehicle collisions, 22 traffic related complaints and conducted 6 RIDE programs over the weekend.
