(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – On January 31, 2014 at 11:23 pm, the South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of an attempted scam by phone from a resident in the Municipality of Kincardine. A “Microsoft technician†called to advise of a computer problem that could be “fixed†remotely for a fee. This scam attempt was quickly identified and the call was disconnected.
Technology provides scammers with both an unlimited supply of information and the resources to create their scams. Tech savvy con artists can forge documents to appear as if they came from a government agency, bank or another established company that you most likely have heard of in an effort to gain your trust. They can also learn about you and your community from an online search before they try to contact you.
There is no limit to the schemes a con artist will attempt to separate you from your hard earned money. Fraud continues to be a multibillion dollar per year enterprise and this will only end when the scams stop making money.
