(HUNTSVILLE, ON) On Friday November 1, 2013 members of the Huntsville Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment responded to a large house party on Stephenson Road 1 west, Huntsville where they found it littered with vehicles parked along the side restricting the road to a one lane of traffic.
The Huntsville OPP estimated over 400 youth between the ages of 16 and 20 were in attendance at this house party. Liquor Licence Act offences were issued to youth who were leaving the residence for having open liquor other than licence premises, being under 19 years and having care and control of a vehicle with open liquor. Huntsville OPP is also investigating an assault that had taken place at the party.
Parents need to know that there are ramifications of allowing your teen to host a house party, including liability. The host must take steps for a reasonable expectation of safety, if anything should happen as a result of the party you are held liable. Underage drinking is illegal, you could be held personally responsible for injuries or damage caused by underage drinking. And home insurance does not cover the cost for damage or injuries in these cases.
Parents: If you suspect that alcohol is going to be involved at a party your teenager is attending, don’t be afraid to contact the parents of the host and express your concerns. Take this opportunity to speak to your teenager about the ramifications of alcohol at a house party. Help them make positive decisions that could end in “life lasting†results.
