(PEMBROKE, ON) – The Upper Ottawa Valley Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Marine Unit was called into action Tuesday June 23rd after a 911 call was received just before noon from a boater in distress on the Ottawa River. The boat’s engine failed and high winds sent the small 10ft aluminum boat into an uncontrolled drift across the Ottawa River. The two occupants of the boat attempted to paddle to safety but were unable to make progress due to the significant waves and high winds.
An officer on shore maintained visual contact with the boat in distress and assisted in guiding the Marine Unit to the boat’s location. The boaters were not injured and they were returned safely to shore along with their boat by the Marine Unit.
The OPP would like to remind boaters to always check the weather forecast prior to venturing out onto the waterways and to anchor and call for assistance should your boat become disabled.
