Man Rescued From Bad Ice On Christmas

(MOOSONEE, ON) – At approximately 2:45 pm on December 25, 2015 the Moosonee Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of an intoxicated male laying on the ice on Moose River. The OPP notified both Moosonee Fire Department and the James Bay Ambulance Service.

Officers arrived at the shore and could observe numerous patches of open water. The male had since stood up and began walking further from shore and closer to open water. The Moosonee Fire Department deployed three members to conduct a rescue on the dangerous ice conditions.

The Fire Department made contact with the man approximately 150 feet from shore. He was able to walk off of the ice under his own power with the assistance of the Moosonee Fire Department members. Once on shore he was transported by James Bay Ambulance for cold weather injuries.

This is the second response to complaints of people on unsafe ice conditions in three days. Although sections of the Moose River are being utilized by snowmobile that does not mean that every section can be presumed safe. Please use extreme caution in entering onto the ice as changing weather and tides continuously affects ice safety. If you don’t know, don’t go!
