The Chatham-Kent police have arrested a man following a dispute in Chatham yesterday afternoon.
Shortly after 12:00 p.m. an officer attended an apartment complex on Taylor Avenue in regards to an unrelated matter. While in the parking lot, the officer observed a 34-year-old man assault a 57-year-old man. The victim did not require medical attention. The officer called out to the younger man to stop, however he yelled obscenities and walked away. The officer followed the man. The man abruptly stopped and dropped the bag he was carrying. The man turned towards the officer with his fists and teeth clenched and reached for the officer’s firearm in an attempt to disarm him. The man was apprehended and taken into custody.
While being searched incident to arrest, the man was found to be in possession of a small double edged dagger. The man refused to identify himself, however the officer located photo identification in his wallet.
The 34-year-old man of no fixed address has been charged with:
– Assault
– Assault a peace officer
– Disarming a peace officer
– Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
The man has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
