MALE DROWNED AFTER CANOE CAP-SIZED

(MARATHON ON) -On Saturday August 10, 2013 around 1:00 pm two males were paddling along the shore of Pukaskwa National Park on Lake Superior and entering the mouth of the White River when their canoe cap-sized. One male managed to get to shore however the other male was swept away by the current.

The male on shore activated a SPOT responder which notified the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) out of Trenton Ontario. A search and rescue aircraft attended the area of the White River and were able to locate the male approximately 500 meters off shore. A vessel from Pukaskwa National Park retrieved the male and immediately started CPR.

Officers from the Ontario Provincial Police Marathon detachment attended the park and assisted with revival attempts until Superior North EMS arrived. However the male was pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the male is being withheld until next of kin can be notified.
