(MUNICIPALITY OF NORTH PERTH, ON) – On Saturday July 04, 2015, around 4:30 a.m., Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers in Listowel were dispatched to an address on Tremaine Avenue South where a homeowner observed a male person in the resident’s unlocked vehicle which was parked in the driveway. The resident confronted the male who ran from the scene.
Officers patrolled the area and located three suspicious persons walking in the area of the vehicle entry. The suspicious persons, two males in their late teens and a 14 year old female, could not be directly linked to the incident. The males were sent home while the female was apprehended under the authority of the Ontario Child and Family Services Act. As she was a child under the age of 16, and was in a public place between the hours of midnight and 6:00 a.m. without a responsible adult present, she was apprehended.
The 14 year old female was taken to the North Perth OPP Detachment where she was picked up by her mother.
In an effort to help property owners protect their items, the Perth County OPP is recommending some tips from the OPP Crime Prevention Section and Insurance Bureau of Canada Auto Theft Protection initiative called “Lock it or lose it”:
Always roll up your vehicle’s windows, lock the door and pocket the key
If you have a garage, use it. Lock the door and the vehicle
Always park your vehicle in a well-lit area
Never leave valuable objects in plain view. If you must leave them in the car, keep them out of sight
Theft is a crime of opportunity that you can help to control. Make your property hard to steal – Lock it or lose it.
