Lifejackets Save More Lives

(LAKE NIPISSING, ON) –On July 18, 2016, at approximately 4:15 p.m., two males were kayaking near the Marina on Lake Nipissing approximately 150 meters from shore. The rough waters and large waves caused both kayaks to capsize.

A person on shore saw a capsized kayak with a male in the water and called North Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

North Bay OPP Marine Unit attended the scene and located one male who did not require assistance, but asked officers to check on second male. The second male was located approximately 100 meters further away. The male was exhausted due to the large waves and was pulled from the water by police.

One male was 51 years old from Kirkland, Quebec, and the other was 23 years old from North Bay, Ontario. Neither of them was injured or needed medical attention. Both men were wearing life jackets which, undoubtedly, led to the positive outcome. It could have been a different result if they had not been wearing them.

It is important to never under estimate the water and always wear a life jacket regardless of your skill with vessels or swimming.
