LAMBTON OPP TEAM WITH MTO FOR COMMERCIAL VEHICLE SAFETY

(PT. EDWARD, ON) The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) participated in a co-operative, commercial vehicle safety effort on September 17, 2013 along with the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO).

The team consisted of seven OPP vehicle inspectors made up from Lambton OPP, Norfolk OPP, Oxford OPP, London OPP Highway Safety Division (HSD), and OPP West Region Highway Enforcement Team (HET) along with two MTO vehicle inspectors. The safety initiative inspection took place in the Village of Pt. Edward, from approximately 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Proper function of the brake systems, steering systems, tires and axles were some of the items being checked. As well, inspectors were looking over the drivers’ log books to ensure sufficient rest for the drivers.

During the course of the safety checks, 37 Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspections (CMVI) were completed. As a result of those inspections, 15 commercial vehicles were taken out of service due to mechanical defects that required some attention and one commercial vehicle was taken out of service for 72 hours because of a false log book.

Five provincial charges were laid as well for the following reasons:

1 false log book
1 for mechanical defect – brakes
2 for not completing a pre-trip inspection
1 for mechanical defect – push rod
