The Huron County OPP, Ontario Provincial Police Association, OPPA Branch Six, Ontario Police Association, Huron Fish and Game Conservation Association, Food Basic’s (Goderich) and Falls Reserve Conservation Area are pleased to announce a children’s fishing derby on Saturday, May 28th, 2011 9:00 am – 1:00 pm at the Falls Reserve Conservation Area pond in Benmiller, Ontario.
The purpose of this event is to invite area youth and their guardians to a day of social interaction with the area law enforcement and emergency personnel. Yes, it’s that simple. There are no hidden agendas. We will be seeking the assistance from some of our specialty units to be present and answer any questions. We also plan to have emergency services equipment on hand for the youth to view.
Each youth, no older than 16 years of age, will be required to pre register. We also ask that those attending try to supply their own fishing equipment and bait, be accompanied by a guardian if required, and wear a personal flotation device while fishing. Several responsible volunteers will be in attendance, and if the availability of fishing equipment becomes an issue, equipment will be on hand to assist. A lunch and beverages will be provided to the youth at no cost courtesy of local merchants. To register, please call 519-524-8314.
According to Bob Izumi, it’s only natural that the Police are involved with helping children. “Police officers spend their entire careers protecting children,†states Izumi. “Events like the one in Goderich are a perfect way for kids to learn that these dedicated men and women care about them as individuals, not as potential young offenders.†Izumi, whose late father Joe always enjoyed introducing children to fishing, has long been an advocate of using recreational fishing as a means of bringing families closer and teaching important life lessons to children.
