Impaired ATV Operator Charged

(BRIGHTON, ON) –On April 9, 2016 at 5:53pm the Northumberland detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motor vehicle collision involving an Off Road Vehicle (ORV) on private property near Evergreen Lane. Police were advised that the vehicle had rolled over onto its operator and that he was injured.

The driver was transported to an area hospital by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) with serious but nonlife threatening injuries. After an investigation at the scene, officers attended the hospital and arrested the driver for impaired operation.

Robert Harold SCOTT age 52 of Brighton, Ontario is charged with Impaired Care & Control of a motor vehicle and Care & Control of a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. He was released at the hospital and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brighton on May 3, 2016.

Investigations into ORV collisions continue to show that alcohol consumption, lack of experience, high speed, lack of helmet use and overall carelessness are major contributing factors in severe injuries or deaths associated with this outdoor activity.

Driving an ORV under the influence of alcohol or drugs is illegal and is the same offence as operating a motor vehicle or vessel. This will result in stiff fines, having your driver’s license suspended or even a jail term.

Sgt. Dave Davidson of the Northumberland OPP Traffic Management Unit “As we near the summer season, I would like to remind the public that the mixture of alcohol and operating ORV’s or boats can lead to devastating outcomes as we witness every season”.

“Let’s have a safe and enjoyable summer by following this common sense rule; drugs, alcohol and machinery of any kind don’t mix”.
