HTA charge laid following fatal collision on Cumberland Street

(Ottawa)— On January 16, 2016 the Ottawa Police Collision Investigation Unit charged Alaadin MURAD, 24 years old of Ottawa with Open Vehicle Door Improperly (Dooring) contrary to 165(a) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) following a fatal collision.

On January 11, 2016, at approx. 4:30pm, a collision occurred between a cyclist on an e-bike and two other motor vehicles on Cumberland Street.

MURAD who had just parked his vehicle on the street opened his door unsafely. As a result, the cyclist hit the car door and was thrown and struck by a passing vehicle that was driving northbound on Cumberland. The 66 year old cyclist succumbed to his injuries on scene.

The Collision Investigation Unit has concluded its investigation into this matter. The victim will not be identified so as to respect the family’s wishes.
