(Municipality of Trent Lakes, ON) – Members of the Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called just before 2:00pm today to assist a couple being followed by a bear in Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park.
The couple were walking in the area of Mississauga Dam Road and Fire Route 130 when they noticed a bear following them. To avoid the bear, the couple entered the icy waters of the Mississauga River, clung to a log and managed to call 911 for assistance.
Using GPS coordinates; OPP officers located the hikers in the water just before 3:00pm and brought them out to a waiting ambulance. Once they were checked over by paramedics; they headed home uninjured.
