On Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at approximately 1:45 p.m., a male entered the Hi-Ya Variety, located at 332 Wharncliffe Road North, while armed with a gun and demanded money. He did not obtain any cash from the two employees before fleeing on foot. No injuries were sustained in this incident.
A suspect was located and arrested at a nearby residence soon after the incident. He had a replica handgun in his possession.
Stemming from this investigation, it was determined that the suspect was also responsible for the theft of a vehicle from an address on Wharncliffe Road North on Monday, March 10, 2014. The vehicle was recovered abandoned in another area of the city on Tuesday, March 11, 2014.
As a result of the investigations, 25-year-old Patrick Conroy, of London, has been charged with the following Criminal Code of Canada offences:
– Two counts of robbery, contrary to section 343(c);
– Use imitation firearm during the commission of an offence, contrary to section 85(2)(a);
– Carry a concealed weapon, contrary to section 90(1);
– Theft of a motor vehicle, contrary to section 333.1(1); and
– Theft, not exceeding $5000, contrary to section 334(b).
