Haliburton Long Weekend Update

(HALIBURTON, ON) – Over the long weekend from Friday May 20 to Monday May 23, 2016 the Haliburton Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to approximately 72 calls for service within Haliburton County.

There were various calls for service consisting of noise complaints, alarms, 911 hang ups, domestic/family disputes, neighbour disputes and motor vehicle collisions.

On May 21, 2016 at approximately 9:28 p.m., officers from the Haliburton Highlands OPP stopped an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) for speeding on Glamorgan Road in Highlands East Township.

After further investigation the driver was arrested at the scene and transported to Haliburton Highlands OPP Detachment for breath tests.

Darwyn MINTZ, 54 years old of Dysart et al, has been charged with the following:

· Driving while Ability Impaired contrary to sec 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC)

· Operation of a Motor Vehicle with Over 80 milligrams Blood/Alcohol sec 253(1)(b) CC

· Drive while disqualified (7 counts) sec 259(4)CC

· Fail to surrender evidence of insurance sec 15(3) Off Road Vehicles Act (ORVA)

· Fail to surrender permit for Off road vehicle sec 3(2) ORVA

· Off Road Vehicle(ORV) speeding more than 50 km/h where limit is over 50km/h HTA reg 316 22(b)

· ORV-Fail to drive at right edge of shoulder HTA reg 316 24(4)

· Drive while under suspension (2 counts) sec 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Minden on July 6, 2016.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has also concluded its Canada Road Safety Week and Victoria Day Long Weekend Safe Driving Campaigns which ran from May 17, 2016 to May 23, 2016. Officers throughout Haliburton Highlands Detachment, and the province, were highly visible on our roadways during this campaign in an effort to ensure motorists had a safe long weekend.

This year’s initiatives focused on the “Big 4” driving behaviours which include Speeding, Distracted Driving, Non seatbelt compliance and Impaired Driving.

During the campaign the following charges were laid in relation to the Big 4:

· Speeding – 90

· Stunt Driving/Racing- 4

· Distracted Driving – 0

· Careless Driving- 1

· Seatbelt charges – 6

· Suspended Drivers – 9

· Impaired Driving-1

· Three-Day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspensions- 3

· Other Moving violations – 9

The Haliburton Highlands OPP is reminding motorists not to let their guard down about other behaviours they need to demonstrate behind the wheel to ensure everyone travels to and from their destinations safely.
