Guelph Police Warn Parents About Youths Playing In Storm Drains

On Sunday October 28, 2012, at 2:20 p.m., Guelph Police responded to a complaint of youths going into the unlocked storm drain on Severn Drive Guelph. Guelph Firefighters checked the storm drains, but they were unable to locate the youths. Members from the Guelph Waterworks Department attended and locked the storm drain gates.

The Guelph Police Wish to Remind Parents:

• Keep children a safe distance from storm-drainage outfalls – When water rushes through an outfall and into a river or stream, it can be forceful enough to overpower and injure people. If you live near a large outfall, warn your children of this danger.

• Never enter the storm-drainage system – Teach your children that they should never enter the underground storm-drainage pipes (through a manhole or an outfall). Inside the storm drainage system, a child can become lost in a dark maze of interconnecting pipes or be swept away by a sudden surge of water from a rainstorm or a leak in a water pipe.
