Woman assaulted by male asking for money

On the afternoon of Friday March 24th, a woman was walking to her vehicle in the parking lot of Harvard Road business when she was approached by a man who asked her for money. When the woman declined, she was assaulted by the man who rode off on a bike. The woman was not hurt and gave a description of the male to police who were able to identify the man from previous dealing with him.

Police attended to his address and arrested the man shortly before 8pm. The 46 year old Guelph man is charged with assault with a weapon and mischief under $5000. He was held in custody for a bail hearing.

Arrest in theft of pick-up truck

Just before 6am on March 24th, a man left the keys in his Ford F150 pick-up truck as he went into a College Avenue business. While he was inside, another man exited the business, got into the truck and drove away. There was video in the business which helped police identify the suspect who was known to police. That man was also wanted for outstanding arrest warrants for a number of offences.

Later that same morning police checked a Wilsonview Avenue address to locate the man, who jumped out a window and was arrested by police. As a result of that arrest and a subsequent search, there was a total of 12 drug possession, possession of stolen property, fraud, weapons and breach charges laid on top of the outstanding warrant charges. The pick-up truck in question was also recovered.

The 27 year old Guelph man was held in custody to appear in bail court.

Theft from motor vehicles

Over the weekend, there were thefts from eight vehicles that were reported to police as being unlocked. The thefts were reported on Paisley Road, Gordon Street, Applewood Crescent, Scottsdale Drive, Stull Avenue, Cole Road and Downey Road. There was a variety of personal papers, property and electronics taken.

In 2016 there were 7 vehicles stolen that were left running, 28 vehicles were stolen using keys that were found/stolen. As outlined below, these lefts are entirely preventable. This year there have been 4 stolen vehicles that were left running and 3 that have been stolen with found keys.

This crime is easily avoided by locking your cars, keeping valuables out of sight or removed from your vehicle and parked in a well-lit and visible area where possible. Not to mention that at no time should you leave keys to any vehicles in another vehicle or leave your car running while you are not in it.

Break and Enter

On the afternoon of March 26th, staff at a Norfolk Street office building had difficulty opening his office door that was damaged from someone attempting to pry it open. It did not appear that the unknown suspect(s) gained entry into this particular office and a few other offices were attempted as well. It was found that the suspect(s) was able to gain entry into three offices where a television and some money from a cash box was taken.

– Sometime overnight Saturday to late Sunday afternoon unknown suspect(s) gained entry to a Woolwich Street office building by forcing open a rear door. There is no alarm or video equipment installed in the building. At the time of this report, it is unknown what was taken during the incident.

Disturbance at VIA Station – arrest

On March 24, 2017 at 8:00 a.m., Guelph Police went to the VIA Station at 79 Carden Street for the report of a male causing a disturbance. Police located the male who had been yelling at staff and patrons and he was arrested. A small quantity of marihuana was also located on this male.

Michael McArthur, 33 years of no fixed address has been charged with cause a disturbance, five counts of breach of probation and possession of a controlled substance.

Intoxicated male apprehended

On the afternoon of March 26th at approximately 2:50pm, police were called to the Stone Road Mall by security staff who had asked an intoxicated man who was behaving badly towards other patrons to leave. He refused and police were called. Police arrived and arrested the man for being intoxicated in a public place. When the man was searched, he was found in possession of alcohol and marihuana that was a breach of previous conditions from criminal charges.

The 41 year old Guelph man was charged with two counts of breach of recognizance, possession of a controlled substance, being intoxicated in a public place and fail to leave premise when directed. He was held in custody to appear in bail court.

Wanted female located

Just before 1am on March 26th, patrol officers saw a woman they knew to be wanted on outstanding arrest warrants for a number of offences. She was approached by police at the front door of a Huron Street house and when she saw police, she ran through the house and out a back window where she was arrested.

The 22 year old Guelph woman is charged with multiple counts of breach of probation, fail to attend, assault, mischief and drug possession charges. She was held in custody to appear in bail court.

Calls for service

Over the weekend, the Guelph Police Service responded to 595 calls for service.
