Just before 8am on January 16th, an east-end resident noticed a man with a dog laying on the ground in a near-by park. The compassion for his well-being prompted a call to police and that concern was well-appreciated when police arrived and learned that the man had actually fallen while walking his dog and hurt his ankle. The 49 year-old man was unable to move and was on the ground for over an hour before he was discovered there. The man was taken to hospital by ambulance to have his injured ankle tended to and arrangements were also made for his dog to be looked after while he received treatment.

Woman pinned between sliding cars

The Guelph Police Traffic Division is investigating a collision that resulted in a pedestrian being struck by a “runaway” motor vehicle.

On Monday 16 January, 2017 at approximately 11:45am a 77 year old Mount Forest man and his 76 year old wife returned to their vehicle that had been parked on the steep north side of Spring Street near Delhi Street. They discovered another car resting against the rear bumper of their car.

The man entered his car and moved it forward and then his wife stepped between the cars to examine the damage. As she was between the two cars, the other car slid forward striking her and pinning her between them.

The driver moved ahead to free her and nearby citizens came to their aid and secured the other car in place with pieces of wood in front of the wheels.

The woman was transported by ambulance to the hospital to treat severe lacerations to both of her legs and is expected to be released.

The sliding vehicle was parked on a downgrade with wheels straight and despite having the emergency brake engaged, appears to have slid on the ice covered road, striking the other vehicle and then the pedestrian.

Motorists are reminded that when parking on a downgrade, the wheels should be turned towards the curb so as to cause the motor vehicle to travel towards and come to rest against the curb should the motor vehicle be set in motion while unoccupied.

This suggested positioning of the wheels may have prevented this incident as one front wheel did travel over dry pavement as the car slid.

Theft suspect located

Earlier today at approximately 3am, a man walked into a Speedvale Av. convenience store, selected some food and began to walk out of the store without making any effort to pay for the items. When the clerk asked him about paying for it, he declined and continued to walk out of the store and left in a motor vehicle.

Police located that vehicle driving a short distance away and stopped it to investigate. It was learned that the 23 year-old man who had taken the food was also wanted on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court. He was arrested for that outstanding warrant and further charged with theft of the food from the store. He will appear today in bail court.

On January 16, 2017, the Guelph Police Service was involved in 209 incidents.
