(Oro-Medonte, ON) – On Thursday June 10th at 12:19pm members of the Barrie Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) marine unit were dispatched, along with the Oro-Medonte Fire Department, to a report of a male floating in Lake Simcoe near Oro Beach.
The male had been fishing in an aluminum boat with his dog when the weather conditions changed and he was knocked out of the boat. He was floating off shore with a life jacket for approximately 3 hours before he was spotted by local Civilians.
The locals called 911 and proceeded to help him to shore. (The dog also made it to shore.)The boater was transported to local hospital and treated for hypothermia. Thanks to fast acting local Civilians and wearing a proper life jacket, the boater survived with non-life threatening injuries.
OPP would like to remind mariners to always check the weather before setting out on the water. Checking weather conditions before departure can prevent life threatening situations like this one.
Also, before you head out on the water, check to make sure all the required safety equipment is on board. Refer to www.boatingsafety.gc.ca for boating safety requirement details. And remember it is mandatory to carry a boat operator’s card with you at all times.
