Fraud Alert

(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County Detachment want to alert all businesses owners after police received a fraud complaint from a Simcoe, Norfolk County, Ontario address.

On Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at approximately 12:21 p.m., police received a complaint from a concerned business owner after they received a call from an unknown male looking to purchase generators.

Through investigation it has been determined that an unknown suspect contacted the business in March of 2015, and placed an order for generators valued at approximately $7,000 dollars by phone. A credit card was provided as payment and a third party was then hired to pick up the order immediately. The credit card appeared valid at first however it later came back as stolen or compromised.

It is suggested that merchants be diligent and ensure the credit card information is valid, preferably only taking credit data from cards presented in person. Merchants are encouraged to contact the credit card issuers and confirm all information before processing a transaction. The adage “if it’s too good to be true, it probably is” is a good
