(HALIBURTON, ON) – On January 29, 2016 at approximately 11:39 p.m., the Haliburton Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report that a snowmobile entered the waters of Dark Lake in Highlands East Township.
Investigation revealed that four people were travelling together on two separate snowmobiles when they broke through the ice. Officers attended the scene with members of the Highlands East Fire Department and located three of the four snowmobilers who went through the ice.
The OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) attended the location to assist the Haliburton OPP with this incident.
On Saturday January 30, 2016 at approximately 10:30am members from the USRU located and recovered Thomas RIVERS, 53 of Highlands East, deceased.
The investigation is continuing and further information will be released as it becomes available.
