(Hawkesbury, ON) On April 7th shortly after 1:00 am, Hawkesbury OPP officers were conducting a RIDE checkpoint on John Street at the bottom of the Long Sault Bridge in Hawkesbury when they observed a 2004 Hyundai Accent travelling towards the officers at a high rate of speed. As it was approaching, the vehicle made a U-turn and headed back up the bridge toward the province of Québec at a high rate of speed. Officers immediately pursued the vehicle which stopped on Route 344. The driver ran away from the vehicle but was caught behind a nearby house.
Illicit drugs were found in possession of the driver.
The investigation revealed that the vehicle had neither insurance nor a valid licence plate.
The driver, Samuel DUVAL-ROBILLARD (18 yrs) of Lachute, QC, was arrested.
He was charged with the following Criminal Code of Canada offences:
– Section 249.1(1) Flight while Pursued by Peace Officer
– Section 249(1)(a) Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle
He was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with sections:
– 12(1)(d) Permit use of plate not authorized for vehicle
– 143(d) U-turn – bridge – no clear view.
He was also charged under the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act with section 2(1)(a) Operate a motor vehicle without insurance.
Finally, he was also charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act with the following sections:
– 4(1) Possession of a Schedule II substance- Cannabis resin – under 1gram.
– 4(1) Possession of a Schedule II substance- Cannabis Marihuana – under 30grams
He was released and is scheduled to appear in court in L’Orignal on May 15th.
