(ORILLIA, ON) – Nearly 60 riders will be taking to the rolling hills and rail trail of Oro-Medonte on Friday, September 6 in support of Friends of The OPP Museum’s third annual Pedal for the Past Bike Ride. Linking their love of fitness, cycling and the preservation of OPP heritage, these dedicated supporters are coming together to challenge themselves to complete either a 25, 50 or 100 kilometre route, and raise some much needed funds for The OPP Museum.
A friendly road or trail ride, the event has attracted participants from all age ranges and fitness levels and from all across the Province. Orillia resident Keith Lem was one of the bike ride’s top fundraisers in 2011 and 2012.
He is riding again and recently stated: “I support the Pedal for the Past Bike Ride as a way to show recognition for the men and women of the OPP who served to protect us in the past and to show support for those serving now and in the future. The ride is also about setting goals and achieving them.â€
Member of Parliament Bruce Stanton has taken up the challenge for the second time, saying: “I am looking forward to doing the 50 kilometre segment again this year. This is a great ride and it is helping the Museum tell the story of the OPP and its service to Ontarians for over a century.â€
Member of Provincial Parliament Garfield Dunlop will also be riding and recently reflected on his participation in 2012 by stating: “Last year was my first time riding in the Pedal for the Past Ride. We had a beautiful day, a large number of enthusiastic bikers, and it was a lot of fun participating in an event that raises money for a worthwhile cause.â€
The focus of the funds raised at this event is to support the completion of the Museum’s Henderson Motorcycle Conservation and Restoration Project. The oldest known original OPP vehicle, this 1931 Henderson motorcycle was one of the last made by Excelsior Motors before closing its doors during the depression.
A rare and highly respected motorcycle, the Henderson was originally purchased at P.A. McBride Cycle in Toronto for $525.00 by Provincial Constable Jack Hinchliffe. Officers at the time were reimbursed for gas and oil expenses, but they had to provide their own motorcycles on the job. Years later, the bike was purchased by OPP Superintended Bert McKie who restored it to its present condition. Donated to the museum in 1996, the bike was completely dismantled late last year and is currently undergoing repairs and conservation in order to ensure it remains in good condition for years to come.
Each rider in the event has raised a minimum of $200.00 in pledges in order to participate, but many have taken on the challenge of competing for the title of “Top Fundraiserâ€. With beautiful routes to ride and a delicious barbecue dinner waiting as a reward for crossing the finish line – it’s sure to be a great day for all.
