FINAL UPDATE – HIGHWAY 401 CLOSED FOR COLLISION

(PORT HOPE, ON) – Northumberland OPP advise that two motor vehicle collisions that occurred today at approximately 6:32 am and 6:44 am on Highway 401 east of Wesleyville have resulted in one male being charged under the Highway Traffic Act.

The first collision involved a slow-moving truck towing a trailer containing carnival equipment and a passing transport truck that was changing lanes. The transport driver was blinded by the rising morning sun and struck the rear of the trailer as it passed.

A third vehicle, a boom truck with roofing shingles, attempted to avoid the collision but ended up going off the roadway losing its load into the south ditch. No charges will laid in this collision.

The second collision involved six vehicles and was a result of a tractor trailer plowing through the original collision scene. The tractor trailer driver and a second driver, a 62 year old male from Schomberg, Ontario were transported to a Cobourg hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Elmer SWAIN, 52 from Marmora has been charged with careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act in this collision.

OPP are still on scene for cleanup purposes and expect the remaining closed lane to be open to traffic by 5:00 pm.
