Fatal Collision

(THUNDER BAY, ON) On Sunday August 9, 2015 at approximately 4:25 pm, officers from the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Shuniah Fire Department and Superior North EMS responded to a two vehicle collision on Highway 11/17 at the east entrance intersection of Lakeshore Drive in the Municipality of Shuniah.

The driver of a GMC truck that was pulling a utility trailer, was east bound on Highway 11/17 approaching the Lakeshore Drive east intersection.

At the same time, the driver of a Pontiac Sunfire was west bound on Highway 11/17, when the driver made a left turn, crossing the divided highway to enter the east entrance of Lakeshore Drive and collided with the GMC truck.

The driver and two occupants of the GMC truck were transported to hospital by ambulance with non life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Pontiac Sunfire, Izidore BORGO, 83 years of age from Thunder Bay was transported to hospital by ambulance where he succumbed to his injuries. Marie BORGO, 81 years of age, from Thunder Bay was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Officers from the OPP North West Region Highway Safety Division and Forensic Identification Unit attended and assisted with the investigation of the collision.
