Fatal Collision

(WEST ELGIN, ON) – On December 5, 2015, at approximately 1:53 p.m., the Elgin County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 401 west bound, between Graham Road and Currie Road.

A blue Buick car was travelling east bound on Highway 401, when, for unknown reasons, it left the roadway and crossed over the centre grass median. The Buick struck a black Ford pickup truck, which was travelling west bound on Highway 401, in the centre lane.

The driver, and lone occupant of the Buick, a 73-year-old male from Oakville, Ontario, suffered life threatening injuries, and died at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The occupants of the Ford, both from Fonthill, Ontario, suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries. The 70-year-old male driver was transported by air ambulance, and his adult female passenger was transported by land ambulance, to hospital, where they remain.

The OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI) attended the scene to assist with the investigation. As a result, Highway 401 was closed in both directions between Graham Road and Currie Road, and traffic was re-routed to emergency detour routes in the area. The west bound lanes remain closed, but the east bound lanes were opened at approximately 5:45 p.m.

This incident is still under investigation.
