Explosive Found In Wingham – Canadian Forces Contacted

On the afternoon of 18 May, Wingham Police were called to a residence on Alice Street where someone had located what appeared to be an explosive.

Investigation revealed that the previous occupant of the residence was a collector and this wartime explosive was part of his collection. The Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit from Canadian Forces Base Borden was contacted and attended to retrieve the ammunition which was determined to be an unexploded 82mm mortar round. It was transported to Borden and destroyed. Police remind the public that if you locate such items, the best practice is to leave them in place and contact the authorities. Over time, explosives can become unstable and are extremely dangerous.
