(CITY OF KAWARTHA LAKES, ON.) – The City of Kawartha Lakes detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is offering parents in OPP patrolled areas the opportunity to gain valuable information related to important topics such as internet safety, drugs and frauds.
Topics:
Wed. April 8, 2015- Internet Safety – “Don’t let your child be the next victim”.
Detective Constable Brian Mc Dermott, from the OPP’s Child Sexual Exploitation Unit will look at popular apps being used by youths and will discuss the dangers of the internet, including Predators and Sexting.
Wed. April 15. 2015 – Drugs – “What is happening to my teenager?”
Detective Constable Whitefield from the OPP’s Community Drug Action Team will look at a number of the street drugs available and discuss legal consequences associated with illegal drugs.
Pharmacist Cathy Puffer will review signs and symptoms of drug use as well as the dangers of prescription drug misuse.
Wed. April 22, 2015 – Frauds – “Don’t get tricked”
Detective Constable T. Schendera from the OPP’s Anti Rackets Branch will speak about some of the top frauds that are occurring in our area. Warning signs and what to do if you think something is a scam will be discussed.

Staying Home Alone –“How prepared are your kids to face an emergency on their own?”
Are you leaving your children home alone now? Are they truly prepared? P/C Carrie Lanning will provide parents with some key factors to consider that will help to prepare youths to stay home on their own.
Wed. April 29, 2015 – Safeguard your home or cottage
Auxiliary Staff Sergeant Gregg Weatherill will review a number of safety aspects that will make your home or cottage a tougher target for would be criminals.
Each session will run from 6:30p.m. until 8:30 p.m. The sessions will be held in the board room of the OPP detachment at #3028 Highway 35 and will require pre-registration.
