Empty Envelope Deposits Result In Fraud Charges

(CAMPBELLFORD, ON) – On September 26, 2013 Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) began a fraud investigation at a banking institute in Campbellford in the Municipality of Trent Hills.

OPP received information that a male suspect had been placing empty envelopes into an automated teller machine (ATM) after opening an account at the bank in May of 2013. The empty envelope deposits occurred on August, 7 / 8 / and 9, 2013. The suspect withdrew $300 each time from the ATM. The investigation began on September 26 and the officer summonsed the male suspect to court for December 3, 2013 in Brighton.

On December 3, 2013 the male suspect did not show up for his scheduled court date and an arrest warrant was issued.

Jonathan Mainse WATTERS, 24 from Campbellford, Ontario was arrested on Sunday December 21, 2014 and has been charged with three counts of fraud under $5,000 and fail to attend court under the Criminal Code. The accused is being held in custody for a bail hearing in the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on Tuesday December 23, 2014 at 1:30 pm.
