(TOWN OF NEW TECUMSETH, ON) – On the 27th of November 2014, officers with the Nottawasaga Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) took report of a fraud amounting to $24,000 from an elderly female in the Town of New Tecumseth.
The 76-year old female victim was contacted on the 14th of November 2014 in the early morning by a male suspect claiming her grandson was involved in a motor vehicle collision, and was now under arrest for Dangerous Driving. The suspect advised that in order for her grandson to receive a fair trial a sum of money needed to be paid. The victim was directed on where and how to send the money, and not to tell anyone because it was embarrassing for her grandson. In the following ten days the victim received further phone calls requesting money for other reasons; lawyer fees, pain and suffering of the accident victims, etc. – The total amount sent was $24,000.
The suspects targeted an elderly female in the Town of New Tecumseth, and played on her emotions to send the money for her grandson.
The Nottawasaga OPP had previously sent out a release detailing this scam, and complaints that had been received where elderly residents of the Town of New Tecumseth were receiving ‘Emergency Scam’ phone calls. Unfortunately, police are investigating a substantial fraud now and the Nottawasaga Crime Unit are engaged.
If you have become a victim of this fraud, please contact the Nottawasaga OPP to make a report by calling, 1-888-310-1122. If you have received a telephone call or mail that you believe is fraudulent you can make report of the details to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online at www.antifraudcentre.ca or call 1-888-495-8501.
