(JOHNSON TOWNSHIP, ON) – On July 8, 2016, shortly after before 4:30 p.m., the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 in Johnson Township.

A vehicle lost control and drove into the eastbound ditch on Highway 17. As a result of the investigation, Sherry FORD, 54 years of age, from Mississauga, Ontario, was issued a provincial offence notice and charged with: Fail to Drive in Marked Lane, contrary to section 154(1)(a) of the Highway Traffic Act.

The vehicle was towed and there were no life threatening injuries.

The OPP reminds motorists that arriving safely at their destination is the primary goal. Drivers need to be aware of various factors to achieve that goal.

These factors include:

Obeying the posted limits. Roadways are engineered to accommodate certain speeds, exceeding those speeds increases the likelihood of a collision.

Remaining attentive while driving. Drivers need to talk or text on cell phones when they are pulled over on the shoulder safely off the roadway.

Knowing your limitations and those of your vehicle. Driver’s abilities vary from person to person depending on their comfort level and experience. Vehicles, too, differ depending on their age and condition.

The most important part of your journey is to make it there safely.

OPP MARINE UNIT TEAMS UP WITH THE MNRF

(JOHNSON TOWNSHIP, ON) – On the evening of July 9, 2016, the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Marine Unit paired up with Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and conducted joint patrols on Cloudy, Diamond and McCarrel Lakes in Johnson Township.

Shortly before 7:00 p.m., a vessel was stopped on Cloudy Lake and police observed open liquor in the boat. The operator of the vessel, Gerald GAGNON, 52 years of age, from Richards Landing, Ontario, was issued a provincial offence notice and charged with: Having Liquor in Open Container in Other than Licensed Premises, Residence or Private Place, contrary to section 31(2) of the Liquor Licence Act.

Shortly after 8:00 p.m., a vessel was stopped on Diamond Lake and police observed open liquor in the boat. The operator of the vessel, Michael GREGORINI, 31 years of age from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, was issued a provincial offence notice and charged with: Operating Boat Underway with Open Container of Liquor, contrary to section 32(2) of the Liquor Licence Act.

Drinking and boating is just as dangerous as drinking and driving, and the same Criminal Code laws apply. It is also an offence to have open liquor in your vessel unless it is moored for the night and has a washroom, cooking and sleeping facilities.
