(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County Detachment was contacted by a concerned citizen after observing a vehicle travelling on Highway 19, Middleton, Norfolk County, Ontario.
On Friday, August 16, 2013 at approximately 4:54 p.m., an alert citizen observed a driver of a motor vehicle attempting to feed a young infant in the rear seat of the vehicle while the vehicle was being operated. The vehicle was observed to cross into oncoming traffic on several occasions before turning west bound onto Highway 3.
Many drivers today tend to view driving, especially in familiar environments, as a simple everyday task that requires minimal attention. In fact, driving is a complex task that requires your full attention every time you get behind the wheel. All drivers need to be aware that they are:
Operating a heavy piece of machinery at various speeds
Navigating across changing terrain
Calculating speeds and distances
Responding to other drivers, signs signals and obstacles around you
The dangers of distracted driving are real and the evidence speaks for itself. Drivers who are distracted are more likely to be in a collision than a driver who is focused on the road.
“Driving safety is everyone’s responsibility and the OPP is asking the public to make reducing deaths and serious injuries on roads a shared priority year round. It starts before the vehicle is put into drive†comments Constable Ed Sanchuk, Norfolk County OPP.
