(ADELAIDE METCALFE, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) West Region (WR) Highway Safety Division (HSD) and the Middlesex County OPP investigated a fatal motor vehicle crash which occurred at approximately 1:51 p.m. on July 2, 2015.
A red Mazda car was traveling westbound on Napperton Drive when it left the roadway. The vehicle continued traveling parallel to the roadway on the north side of Napperton Drive where it struck a pedestrian on private property. The vehicle came to rest on its side on the south side of the road after striking a tree.
45-year-old Leonard WESTGATE, from Adelaide Metcalfe, Ontario, died at the scene.
The 34-year-old male driver and lone occupant of the vehicle, Mason NEUFELD, from Strathroy Caradoc, Ontario, was transported by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries to hospital; and subsequently discharged.
The OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI) attended to assist with the investigation. As a result, Napperton Drive was closed between School Road and Seed Road until approximately 9:00 p.m.
The driver of the Mazda was arrested and has subsequently been charged with the following Criminal charges:
Impaired Operation/Care or Control of a Motor Vehicle/Cause Death – Alcohol – CCC Section 255(3)
Causing Death by Criminal Negligence – CCC Section 220(b)
Exceed 80 Milligrams Blood Alcohol Content/Motor Vehicle/Cause Accident with Fatality – CCC Section 255 (3.1)
He was further charged with driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available, contrary to the Liquor Licence Act (LLA) section 32(1).
The accused was held in custody, and is schedule to answer to the charges in a London court on July 3, 2015.
