(Marysville, ON)- On Monday, January 4, 2016 at 10:35 a.m. an officer with the Ontario Provincial Police- Highway Safety Division (HSD) conducting radar enforcement attempted to stop a light green Kia Soul that was speeding eastbound on Highway 401 in Tyendinaga Township.
The driver failed to stop the vehicle for the officer and accelerated onto the shoulder of the Highway passing several vehicles at a high rate of speed.
The vehicle exited 401 eastbound onto County Road 49 in Marysville and was last seen heading north.
Minutes later the officer located the Kia in the ditch at the intersection of
County Road 49 and Waddingham Road, Tyendinaga Township. The vehicle had gone through the intersection and slid into the ditch, hitting a tree. No one had remained at the scene.
Within minutes an officer with the Napanee OPP located and arrested the driver coming out of the woods nearby on Waddingham Road. Police seized a small quantity of crystal methamphetamine and marihuana from the man.
The driver, 27 year-old Joshua GJELSTAD of Belleville was held for a bail hearing and faces charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, flight from police, dangerous driving, stunt driving, 2 counts of possession of a controlled substance, and driving without a licence.
The vehicle had been stolen from a residence on Hawthorn Street in Belleville earlier that morning.
