(QUINTE WEST, ON) On September 18, 2013 at approximately 3:00pm, Quinte West OPP officers stopped an eastbound vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Highway 401 at County Rd 40.
While officers were speaking to a female passenger the driver of the motor vehicle 27 year old Drew STONE of Belleville placed the vehicle in drive and accelerated rapidly away from officers. The officer took evasive action to avoid being dragged by the vehicle. The officer was struck on his right leg by the fleeing motor vehicle.
The fleeing suspect vehicle stopped at a Trenton-Frankford Rd business south of Highway 401 were STONE then fled on foot, he was located a short time later and was taken into custody.
Drew STONE 27 of Belleville has been charged with assault police, assault with a weapon, theft over $5000, possession of stolen property over $5000, possession of stolen property under $5000, flight from police, and dangerous driving. STONE is being held for a bail hearing at 11:00 am at 15 Bridge St West in Belleville.
In the vehicle at the time of the traffic stop there were four other passengers including a child under the age of 1. The vehicle involved in this incident was later confirmed to be a stolen vehicle from the Belleville area.
None of the involved police officers were injured during this incident.
