DISTRESS BEACON ALERTS POLICE TO STRANDED CANOEIST

(FORT FRANCES, ON) – On Tuesday May 19, 2014 at approximately 2:00 pm CST, officers of the Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were contacted by a Minnesota tourist outfitter to advise that one of the camp patrons who had set out on a canoe trip had sent a SPOT locater message indicating they needed help on Kawnipi Lake in Quetico Park.

Police were informed of the GPS coordinates and made efforts to respond that day but were delayed due to poor weather. Officers and a paramedic responded to the area by air on the morning of May 20, 2014 and located the canoeist safe and sound. His canoe had drifted away from shore and leaving him stranded on an island. The canoe was retrieved by officers.
