Deceased Identified In Severe Weather Incident In Provincial Park

(ATIKOKAN, ON) – Shortly after 5:00 am on July 21, 2016 members of the Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were advised of a fatality related to a severe weather system that moved through the Basswood Lake Area. Officers were advised that there were also injured parties at the same camp site on Basswood Lake near Prairie Portage, Quetico Provincial Park.

A combined effort is being undertaken with the assistance of Ontario Parks, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) the U.S Forestry Service as well as the Lake County Sheriff Department. The injured parties have been treated at the scene and transported to medical care in Duluth.

Members of the North West Region Emergency Response Team (ERT) with a Scenes of Crime Officer (SOCO) are attending the scene to investigate.

The incident is not considered suspicious.

The deceased have been identified as:

Rorth LAC a 39 year old female from Carrollton, Texas, and

Christian James SANCHEZ a 13 year old male from Lewisville Texas.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted at Lake of The Woods Hospital in Kenora Ontario on July 22, 2016.
