Death Investigation Update – Accused Arrested at Airport

(GREY COUNTY, ON) – Following a lengthy investigation, members of the Grey County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Major Crime Unit, under the direction of Detective Inspector Pete Liptrott of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), have laid charges against Jessica MORRISON, 41-years-old.

On July 18, 2017, Grey County OPP and Grey County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a Grey Highlands address regarding a female in medical distress undergoing opioid withdrawal treatment. The female, Danielle BARHAM, 23-years-old, of the Township of Georgian Bluffs subsequently died at the Owen Sound Hospital on July 20, 2017.

On November 14, 2018, the accused was arrested by Grey County OPP Crime Unit members at Toronto Pearson International Airport in Toronto. She has been charged with the following offences:

Criminal Negligence Causing Death, contrary to section 220(b) of the Criminal Code;

Trafficking a Controlled Substance, contrary to section 5(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (6 counts); and with

Selling a Prescription Drug Recklessly, contrary to section 31.4 of the Food and Drugs Act (2 counts).

On November 15, 2018 at the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound, the accused was released on a recognizance with a subsequent court appearance of December 13, 2018.
